The geological survey ship Pluto 5 returns to the Moon after an eighteen-month-long exploratory mission, but its crew are all found to have been dead for a year, all apparently killed at the same moment. Hanimed, the medical company in charge of the mission, sends Doctor Anna Shoun to assist the International Space Police Force with their investigation into the deaths. Moonbase co-ordinator Krivenko becomes concerned for the welfare of his colleague, Doctor Christina Jannsen, after all communication is lost with her orbiting laboratory. When Jannsen is subsequently found dead of an apparent suicide, the link with the death of the survey team becomes apparent: Hanimed. Spring discovers that the thermostat in Jannsen's lab and that of Pluto 5 were both set at 42oC. Meanwhile, an overweight Colin Devis is forced to get into shape for his upcoming physical, otherwise he will lose his job in the I.S.P.F. and be sent back to Earth. Learning of this, Spring sees the perfect opportunity to infiltrate a member of the Star Cops into Hanimed...
